Billy – a permanent resident

Billy is a retired Standardbred pacer in his middle years who has finally found his forever home here at Track & Thrive. Like many ex-racers, Billy had passed through several homes post-retirement. When he arrived, he was considered difficult to manage — but much of his behaviour stemmed from unrecognised pain and discomfort. With patience, compassion, and a commitment to understanding his needs, Rachel worked with Billy on his terms, gently uncovering the sources of his pain and supporting his healing journey. Today, Billy is the picture of a calm, respectful gentleman — a willing partner who now enjoys peaceful trail rides and a life of safety, routine, and genuine care.

Max– a permanent resident

Max is a young Thoroughbred who was retired from racing early for being “too slow.” By just six years old, he had already faced more than most horses do in a lifetime. When he arrived at Track & Thrive, Max was struggling with a complex web of physical and emotional challenges: laminitic feet, severe stomach ulcers, mild kissing spine, PTSD, separation anxiety, and limited herd socialisation. He was also deeply anxious around food and fearful of human interaction.

Over the past 12 months, Max has been on a powerful journey of healing through liberty work, trust-building, and a complete reset of his understanding of both humans and herd life. With the help of his steady companion, Billy, Max is learning how to read herd dynamics and build confidence in social settings. He’s also discovering that humans can approach with kindness, softness, and consistency.

Though his journey is ongoing, Max has transformed into the sweetest, smoochiest, goofiest boy — and he’s finally finding his feet in a world that’s now built on safety, patience, and mutual trust.
